The infamous cheesiness of romantic comedies is what turns away most movie lovers from binge-watching classics like Julia Robert or Drew Barrymore love stories, but Rebel Wilson’s “Isn’t it Romantic” has brought out both the good and bad in romantic comedies.

There is no doubt that rom-com storylines can stray away from reality, creating a perfect love life, leading viewers to wait for the next Derek Shepherd to magically stumble upon them. Yet, the stories never seem to focus on the importance of what it means to love someone or even yourself. Luckily, Wilson’s take on rom-coms has come to tell the truth of why those movies are “bad and set to terrible pop songs”, as main character Natalie, played by Wilson would say.

Growing up Natalie admired romantic movies and dreamed about what her fairy tale guy would be like, but her belief in true love was soon crushed when her mother told her the harsh reality that ordinary girls like them do not get the dream guy. From then on Natalie went through life still believing her mother’s words that romance is a myth and not going to come true.

Unfortunately for Natalie, it seems the universe does not agree with her. While getting mugged in the subway on her way home from work, Natalie runs into a metal beam head on putting her into a 48-hour induced coma. During her coma, she enters what seems like an alternate universe, in a beautiful city filled with happy people and bright colors. This world is actually a living romantic comedy in which Natalie has the best seat in the house.

Since it is still technically a romance movie, it brings every classic romantic scene in the book, from kissing in the rain to stopping a wedding to confess true love. To some those scenes are the reason romance haters exist, it can be very awkward and viewers are anxiously waiting for the sense of humor to come back in to play. The whole movie is full of skit-like scenes and awkward moments that will make you feel like you are watching Saturday Night Live. Yes, it will make viewers cringe, yet also want to laugh out loud, as even romance haters will get a kick out of it.

In the end, what makes this movie unique is the focus on who the main character should really fall in love with, yourself. Everyone should learn to love oneself before they love others.“Isn’t It Romantic” is a must-see for both parties. Both romance lovers and haters will get a good laugh and see what makes these girly movies both good and bad in their own unique way, making this, not  the average rom-com.
